Welcome to Strathcona Nursery School!

Curious Children

The program at Strathcona Nursery School is based on the theory that children learn through play. This recognizes that young children learn through active involvement and meaningful experimentation. It also recognizes early childhood as a period where children should be provided the opportunity to gain independence through initiative, creativity, decision-making and problem solving, all of which help them to develop the ability to relate to others and feel good about themselves.

Our Mission

The focus of the nursery school is not on structure or academics, but on personal development and socialization. Activities are planned which allow the children to make choices, problem solve and be creative. Art activities are often open-ended and the children are free to create as they desire, emphasizing the process rather than the product and therefore fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Empowering our children to become mighty learners through play.

Strathcona Nursery School Mission Statement

Why Choose SNS?

Mixed-age Classes

We accept children aged 2.5 to 5 years. Younger kids aged 2.5 to 3 are encouraged to register on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, where they are supported with their peers to learn the routines of the classroom and become comfortable with being at school. Once they turn 3, they are invited to register for up to four sessions per week.

Diapers are okay!

Your child is not required to be fully comfortable using the toilet when they start at SNS. While we encourage listening to your body to tell you when it's time to use the toilet (and we have a private, kid-size washroom area in the classroom), we are equipped to deal with diapers and accidents.

Flexible Schedule

With nine morning and afternoon sessions to choose from, it's easy to find a schedule that works for your family. We run three terms each year, and expect families to commit to at least one full term. If space is available we are happy to register kids from all neighbourhoods in Edmonton during our open registration periods over the school year.

She has had 25 years working as an educator with 7 years teaching in Elementary Schools, 2 years as an Education Assistant for PUF supported children, and 17 years as a preschool teacher, 15 of those at SNS.

Mitzi believes in teaching from the heart, and recognizes, supports and fosters a child’s innate drive and life long love to learn. She appreciates that learning is a personal journey and that everyone travels at their own rate.

Teacher Mitzi truly believes that the foundation of learning is play. She is passionate about continuing to grow as a support to young learners, and in her spare time enjoys campfires, spending time with loved ones, nature, gardening, and is a bit of a foodie. Music and art are among many of her great interests.

She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in French Language and Literature. She is a Certified Child Development Supervisor, and is fluent in 3 languages (French, English and Spanish). She has had 20 years of experience working with children and families in various settings such as daycare, day camp, tutoring, and within the Edmonton Public School system as an Educational Assistant.

She started working with Teacher Mitzi at the nursery school in 2009, and has found her to be a great resource and mentor.

Cristina strongly believes that children learn best through play. They develop better thinking skills, problem solving skills, social skills, creativity and empathy. She is passionate about letting their curiosity direct learning.

Kernisse has been a pre-school teacher since 2011. She studied early childhood education in her homeland of St Vincent, and taught there for five years before settling in Canada in 2016. In 2018 she qualified as a license certified Healthcare Aide Worker, but decided that early childhood education was her passion. She started at SNS on a practicum for her Education Assistant studies, and hasn’t left! She has also worked as a lunchroom supervisor at King Edward Elementary School for six years.

Kernisse has been working with Mitzi and teacher Cristina since 2018, and they have been wonderful mentors. She loves working with kids, and has a passion for seeing kids learn through play and develop their physical and social skills. When Kernisse is not at work, she loves enjoying the outdoors with her daughter, and enjoying food from different cultures.

Our teachers believe in having an environment where children can ‘Be Safe and Have Fun’ (our classroom motto)!
