The program at Strathcona Nursery School is based on the theory that children learn through play. This recognizes that young children learn through active involvement and meaningful experimentation. It also recognizes early childhood as a period where children should be provided the opportunity to gain independence through initiative, creativity, decision-making and problem solving, all of which help them to develop the ability to relate to others and feel good about themselves.
"Empowering our children to become mighty learners through play."
The focus of the nursery school is not on structure or academics, but on personal development and socialization. Activities are planned which allow the children to make choices, problem solve and be creative. Art activities are often open-ended and the children are free to create as they desire, emphasizing the process rather than the product and therefore fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Mitzi is our head teacher. She has a Bachelors of Education in Elementary Education with a Minor in Early Education and History, and she is a Certified Child Development Supervisor. She has had 25 years working as an educator with 7 years teaching in Elementary Schools, 2 years as an Education Assistant for PUF supported children, and 16 years as a preschool teacher, 14 of those at SNS. Mitzi believes in teaching from the heart, and recognizes, supports and fosters a child’s innate drive and life long love to learn. She appreciates that learning is a personal journey and that everyone travels at their own rate. Teacher Mitzi truly believes that the foundation of learning is play. She is passionate about continuing to grow as a support to young learners, and in her spare time enjoys campfires, spending time with loved ones, nature, gardening, and is a bit of a foodie. Music and art are among many of her great interests.
Cristina has recently re-joined the teaching staff at SNS after a 6 -year break to be home with her son, and serves as an Educational Assistant at Strathcona Nursery School. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in French Language and Literature. She is a Certified Child Development Supervisor, and is fluent in 3 languages
Cristina has recently re-joined the teaching staff at SNS after a 6 -year break to be home with her son, and serves as an Educational Assistant at Strathcona Nursery School. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in French Language and Literature. She is a Certified Child Development Supervisor, and is fluent in 3 languages (French, English and Spanish). She has had 20 years of experience working with children and families in various settings such as daycare, day camp, tutoring, and within the Edmonton Public School system as an Educational Assistant. 13 years ago she started working with Teacher Mitzi at the nursery school and has found her to be a great resource and mentor. Cristina strongly believes that children learn best through play. They develop better thinking skills, problem solving skills, social skills, creativity and empathy. She is passionate about letting their curiosity direct their learning, and she believes in having an environment where children can ‘Be Safe and Have Fun’ (our classroom motto)! Mitzi and Cristina fit like yin and yang…where one provides strength and direction the other brings quiet and calm.
