About Us

Strathcona Nursery School is a parent cooperative that began in 1978. Parent contribution, through fundraising and board or committee participation, is mandatory and vital to the operation and health of the school. In addition, there are regular duty parent days in the classroom to ensure a low adult/child ratio. These duty parent days also allow you to spend time with your children in a relaxed classroom environment and share in their learning experiences.

Strathcona Nursery School Philosophy

"Our goal is to offer a safe, positive socialization experience for your child. We strive to meet the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of children by providing a carefully planned developmentally age appropriate program. We depend on the support and co-operation of our parents and teachers to maintain this above average program."

Our program is based on "learning through play" with an early literacy component. We attempt to bring the stories we read to life by integrating them into our organized themes. We explore, through art and dramatic play, the ideas presented in the story and by the storybook characters. We use this as the basis for teaching children that print has meaning.

Benefits of Nursery School

Socialization is the most important benefit derived from Nursery School.

The children learn to:

  • Express thoughts, feelings and ideas to others.
  • Mmanage their behaviour in a group setting.
  • Compromise with one another to reach a resolution
  • Be empathetic towards others.
  • Express themselves creatively through art, music and play experiences.
  • Become more independent and develop self-confidence.

In addition, the children:

  • Re-introduced to the joy of reading through exposure to a wide variety of stories and classic fairytales.
  • Learn from each other ’s play and expand their play schemas.

Parents Co-operative Responsibilities

As a member of a parent led co-operative playschool means the very existence of the school depends on your commitment and dedication throughout the school year. The parent body works together toward common goals, the most important of which is providing a happy, satisfying preschool experience for our children.

Your annual responsibilities in the co-op are fourfold:

  1. Duty Parent
  2. Board of Directors or Committe Members
  3. Fundraising and Marketing
  4. Cleaning Bee

  • Persistent cough, sneezing, runny nose
  • Infected nasal discharge, e.g. thick, colored nasal drainage.
  • Infected eyes

A communicable disease, e.g. chicken pox, mumps

Discipline Policy

At Strathcona Nursery School we maintain a respectful and safe environment. In the classroom we take a preventive approach to discipline. We are aware of what is happening at all times so that we can intervene before an incident occurs. We recognize and verbally acknowledge the children’s efforts to get along with each other. We set reasonable age appropriate, consistent limits for the children. When we emphasize what the children can do they are more likely to pursue this course to receive the attention they need. "Natural Consequences" is the primary method of managing any inappropriate behavior. Time outs are used sparingly, for example, if one child hits another.

In order to ensure a positive environment for the children enrolled in the program, they must be able to function appropriately in a group setting. If at any time during the school year a child exhibits excessive aggressive behavior, we will need to evaluate whether this program is suitable for that child. The teacher and a parent liaison would meet with the parent(s) to discuss the teacher’s observations and would help to set up a positive behavior program to help the child. If no progress were being made the teacher, the parent liaison member and the Board of Directors would decide whether it is appropriate for the child to remain in the program.

Snack Policy

Parents are responsible for providing a snack for each child. As a learning environment, Strathcona Nursery School wishes to encourage nutritious snacks in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide (www.healthcanada.gc.ca/foodguide).

The following list outlines the allowable foods for snacks:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain crackers, deli meats, cheeses, yogurts, milk and 100% juices are excellent options.
  • For the safety of our children, Strathcona Nursery School does not allow any foods containing peanuts or tree nuts.
